Tell Your Story NOW! Timely Advice from Dope Co-Producer Mimi Valdes

As filmmakers, we all know the power of storytelling. The visual medium is an effective tool to bring stories to a global audience. Should we all aspire to create something with a universal theme, a film all people can relate to regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, color, religion or sexual orientation? Well, yes!

As a Co-Producer on Dope, writer/director Rick Famuyiwa’s coming of age dramedy about a geek carefully surviving life in his tough neighborhood, we hoped audiences could see themselves in these characters. I’m so honored our film was chosen as part of Sundance’s 2016 Film Forward program. While spending two days screening Dope in Atlanta, I witnessed firsthand how our movie connects with audiences. More than anything, I was touched by how our non-traditional film seemed to encourage aspiring filmmakers to tell their own stories.

Here are quotes from three emails I received from Film Forward event participants:

“Your words and wisdom came to me at the complete right time for my life/career. As a budding film producer, I get so much value from being able to listen and learn from those who have gone before me.”

“The film and your story of striving to manifest your passion project resonated with me as I find myself in a similar situation working on realizing my dreams as well.”

“Meeting you gave me an up close and personal look at how attainable my dream really is and why women like us have to continue to tell stories that push our culture.”

Wow!

Yes, we all deserve the opportunity to tell our stories. Whether it’s challenging stereotypes, opening doors to other cultures, or ideas that spark dialogue, the power of storytelling is limitless. No one group should have a monopoly on that screen. Now that technology has democratized who can create content, we can all utilize those tools. It’s not about the sophistication of your camera or how big your budget is. Make your story great and the rest will follow!
